Hycotuss
Hycotuss is the first and only hydrocodone based combination cough suppressant in a solid oral dosage form that does not contain chlor-pheniramine. In a 1,500 patient survey of their cold and flu symptoms, Hycotuss relieves the two most common symptoms reported by patients.
Importantly, Hycotuss does NOT contain chlorpheniramine as does Tussionex and Hycotuss is NOT a liquid. Liquid cough products lead to dosing errors. Chlorpheniramine is a first generation antihistamine that can create sedation and respiratory depression that is additive to the effects of hydrocodone. Recently, FDA required new labeling for Tussionex after reports of infant and adult deaths due to drug overdose:
The new FDA warning states:
| “It is important that TUSSIONEX be measured accurately. [italics in original] A household teaspoonful is not an accurate measuring device and could lead to overdosage, especially when half a teaspoon is to be measured [2.5ml, the pediatric dose]. It is strongly recommended that an accurate measuring device be used. A pharmacist can provide an appropriate measuring device and can provide instructions for measuring the correct dose. Please ask a pharmacist for advice”. |
Hycotuss is not labeled with these cautions because it does not contain chlorpheniramine and Hycotuss is formulated with capsules to provide more accurate dosing than liquids such as Tussionex.
In interviews with practicing physicians, doctors liked the proposed hydrocodone combination because it offers advantages to the patient in terms of efficacy, safety and convenience. Improved efficacy comes from combining two effective ingredients that treat the most common cough and cold symptoms simultaneously. The solid dosage form offers the safety advantage of more accurate dosing vs. liquids. Physicians also expect that these combinations will be safer due to less sedation and reduced over dose potential. Improved convenience comes from having two medicines in one tablet and from better portability versus a liquid.
